It's been incredible to think of the process, by speaking to people that don't get the spotlight so often and that becomes a very powerful experience in and of itself. Sani is always down for the good times and even though i think this is one where he maybe bit off more than he imagined, i couldnt ask for a better designer on this project. He brought on Mathias “TypeGorilla” who works on the Pirates books and Slash by Gigi various projects. He helped really bring the project to life. Thankfully Moritz was able to help me and really took what I was doing to the next stage. It also really helped that I was able to test and learn as we launched to identify the kinds of potential people who might be interested in the book and the creative that works best for them. Talking of creating something for yourself, I have been listening to a podcast from NPR called “how I built this” which features interviews with some amazing entrepreneurs including Richard Branson of Virgin, Yves Chouinard from Patagonia, Mark Cuban, the inventors of instagram and one of the key things you notice on each of them is that usually they came up with each idea through seeing an opportunity, being young enough to act on it and having zero responsibilities so they could commit to it. Money was never something they felt like they needed. Its shocking really. Scandinavians can speak 5 languages and most in our two countries can’t muster a second language. Try it. Travel with it. It isn’t really that hard once you unlock that part of your brain that encourages learning. Maybe. It wasn’t meant that way. I’m in no means the best person to look to for advice, but these are just my thoughts and sometimes as a kid growing up you just want someone to talk to who isn’t a friend, a teacher or a parent. Everyone wants what they think is best for you, I’m just laying out what worked for me. - How did this book come to life? When we’re younger it seems like everyone always wants to know what we’re going to do when we grow up. The reality is most people are still figuring it out. The narrative we are fed at school around the common blueprint that’s laid out for us seems such an outdated model for the society we see ahead of us. This started as a blog, that then became a LinkedIn discussion, which led me to talk to 50 inspiring people who have cultivated themselves a unique role in the world. I wanted to dig beneath the surface to understand what it takes to “make it.” What I discovered along the way was a set of commonalities, many of which we’re seemingly taught at school which we can all learn from, myself included. The result is an ongoing project for anyone looking to explore their own efficiency and long term sustainability, or an alternative career path in a constantly evolving world.
